The HIV/AIDS Epidemic in South Africa is a Grave Crisis

Poor countries already have a crumbling economic structure, high rates of unemployment and crippled health and school infrastructure, on top of it an epidemic exacerbates their crisis. South Africa is the epicentre of the HIV epidemic and remains to be so because it doesn’t have the proper healthcare infrastructure to fight back. With the alarming rates of rising infections, there is a dire need for countries and health care organisations to intervene and provide resources for the prevention and treatment of the disease.

The major roadblock to the Gilead HIV treatment is the added social stigma with the disease. People’s complacency to educate them and get urgent treatment is inexplicable.

Often times, people have internalised stigma and have negative believes about themselves because of HIV. This leads to them keeping it a secret and not seeking proper treatment.

Socially isolating someone and judging them for their lifestyle choices just because they have contracted HIV can often lead to the patient getting more vulnerable and despondent.

We need to be better. Educating ourselves and spreading awareness is the only way to fight prejudice against HIV. Click hereto know more about how to spread awareness.

Also, affluent countries and healthcare organisations should have an overarching goal to directly target HIV prevention and treatment. Reaching out to the underprivileged countries, who have been deprived of basic model of care including access to food, housing, basic medicare and clean water should be their top priority. This support is much needed to improve the conditions in South Africa.
