Gilead Compass Initiative®: Collaborating with Organizations to Reduce HIV Stigma

HIV/AIDS has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization and several families are still struggling to get the right medicines and treatment for the disease. In addition to this, there is an extensive amount of social stigma attached to the disease and it has affected numerous families and made it difficult to cope with it. This stigma has been seen rising in Southern USA where several African Americans HIV families have been severely affected due to this disease. Several non-profits are actively working towards reducing this stigma but lack funding to carry out effective programs. Though the scenario is dark and bleak, there is a ray of hope in the form of an excellent initiative namely Gilead Compass Initiative®.

Started by Gilead Sciences Inc., Gilead Compass Initiative® is started with the mission to facilitate numerous organizations and agencies working in Southern USA to reduce any disparity in care and awareness about the disease in the region. Working with a vision of collaborating with local organizations, this initiative is a 10-year, $100 million commitment by Gilead Sciences Inc. to the community and HIV/AIDS-stricken families. With shared values such as active involvement of affected families in the decision making, openness, transparency, social and racial justice, Gilead Compass Initiative® is striving hard to reduce the stigma associated with the HIV pandemic. This Gilead HIV initiative has established three COMPASS Coordinating Centers namely, Southern AIDS Coalition, Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, and University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. These coordinating centers focus on the following three areas:

· Stigma reduction

· Capacity building and knowledge sharing

· Mental, substance use, well-being, and trauma-informed care.

Also, through these coordinating centers, local organizations can apply for grants and funding. Gilead Compass Initiative® is offering four grants namely ACTION grants, core grants, transformative grants, and SPARK! Grants.

Gilead Compass Initiative® has been successful in its mission for helping families struck by the stigma HIV/AIDS has posed on them. Until now, the initiative has partnered with 148 organizations, provided 289 grants and training, and helped up to more than 14000 people. Apart from this, the coordinating centers of Gilead Compass Initiative® provide training and consultations at individual and organizational levels. So, if your organization is working towards combating the stigma caused by HIV then Gilead Compass Initiative® is the best initiative to associate with. If you want to know more, you can contact them by sending a direct message through their website.
