Dealing With Internalized Stigma For People With HIV

HIV stigma refers to prejudiced or negative attitude and behavior towards people living with or at risk of HIV Gilead. Discouraging people from getting a thorough knowledge about their health status, not providing treatment on time, not accepting them socially can adversely affect the health and the welfare of people suffering from HIV. According to the CDC study, 80% of adults getting medical care in the United States have reported feeling internalized by the HIV-related stigma. You can also help in reducing HIV stigma by speaking out about the myths and providing the correct information about HIV. This is why HIV stigma reduction is the first and foremost step to champion this epidemic. But do you know that internalized stigma, the negative biases, and judgment individuals with HIV harbor about themselves can lead to feelings of shame, depression, and can affect one’s ability to stay continue with their HIV medication.

In order to stand up against stigma we all need to as a society, become more empathetic and educated. We need to learn which words have negative connotations and which words are empowering for the patients with HIV. We need to stand by and support people who have HIV so that they can resume to the normal way of life without having to feel that they are being judged or talked about wrongly in the society. To bring this change, it is necessary that we relearn about the disease and eradicate the stigma around it.
